With all those Austrian cores it might be fun to let that revanchism simmer and see if I can engineer a fascist state.Īfter the end of the WW1 Italy went through an extremely harsh social conflict: the country wasn't really united, the Pope, which had a great influence, was still describing himself as "prisoner" (this will cease with the Lateran Treaty in 1929), the war industry was demobilizing, thus leaving many people unemployed and the economy wasn't advanced at all, since a great part of the country was still relying on agricolture, often poor workers in latifiundia. I haven't tried an Italy game yet, though. In the game, I've never seen fascism become popular. The loss of land and prestige (We were the Roman Empire once! We were the Holy Roman Empire once!) and the feeling of 'missing out' on the possibilities of the time period (colonization, especially), was another major factor. The 1930s saw a great despair and disillusionment with capitalism and the world economic order as a whole, but communism as an unattractive alternative. These national goals usually involved finding solutions to recent or longstanding issues. The idea was to have strong unions but also strong capitalist classes, who could set aside their differences and focus on national (as opposed to class) goals.

Fascism came as the centre path between capitalism and socialism, and can also be called corporatism.

Another part of it (historically) was general anger at the political system.
